Music has been a lifelong love for Greg Bryce. Ever since his grandmother, who was a piano teacher and performer saw him picking out tunes by himself and recommended lessons, he has been drawn to the magic and the mystery of musical sounds. After completing his 4th Grade piano exams with honours he turned to the guitar at the suggestion of his mother Betty. The first two albums he bought as a teenager were all about guitar and became his first entry point into rock and blues. “Johnny Winter And Live” and “Get Yer Ya Yas Out” by the Rolling Stones set his course and steered him into a garage with friends Mark Middleton and Darrell Mepham to form the band Meccalissa which then became DV8. Greg was never content to play only covers and along with his band carved out a reputation in the Newcastle rock scene during the 80s with many original songs and albums that became Top 20 hits. Some of these songs also ended up on several Screaming Jets albums.
Just when DV8 was reaching a peak Greg decided on a life change and spent many years travelling the world involved in yoga and meditation practice. He became a yoga teacher and is still on the path of learning about the depths of inner knowledge and personal transformation.
After 7 years of ‘taking a professional music break’ he decided to once again write, record and perform with his 1996 album “Helium Heart”. This album had a gentle acoustic flavour and as he said was “dedicated to the one Heart where all differences dissolve.” This led to a new musical direction with band Jigzag, a folk pop trio of guitar, violin and double bass, who recorded 5 albums and toured the world winning many awards and gaining popularity with their uplifting, joyous original music. Jigzag played from 1997 to 2010 and most recently performed in 2018 for Wintermoon Spring Festival.
Greg is currently performing mainly as a solo artist with occasional shows in his original bands Hot Yogis, DV8 and Greg Bryce Band. He plays a huge range of covers from all styles past to present along with his diverse array of originals…..the blues rock of DV8, the funky acoustic Hot Yogis, the joyous folk/pop of Jigzag and is currently recording new songs with Greg Bryce Band (Georgia Hazzard – bass, vocals and Robbie Long – drums, guitars, vocals).
